"FRANCE AND RELIGION: THE BIG PICTURE"

3 - PART SERIES

I suspect learning about religion in France has not been that high on your list of 'to do's'.  Until I dove more deeply into the subject, it wasn't a huge priority for me either.  But here's the catch.  What happened in France is really about what happened in Europe and all those historical periods build on one another and -- you guessed it -- lead us to our world today.

So this is a terrific opportunity to get a bird's eye view of the overarching patterns that emerged through the Roman period in ancient Gaul/France, the Middle Ages, the Reformation in nearby Germany, the break from the Papacy, the Enlightenment, and how all those roads led even to the French Revolution.   Three hours.  Three sets of slides with maps and beautiful art.  Sit back, learn, and grow in your understanding of our world today.

In this course, "FRANCE AND RELIGION:   THE BIG PICTURE",  we’ll explore three areas:

  • The surprising thread of religion throughout French history, in spite of its secular reputation today.

  • Caesar, Gaul and the Galations give the background on the fierce tribe Paul would encounter in the next century that led to our New Testament letter, "Galatians".

  • The Protestant Reformation's ripple effect on France and what it meant for politics, culture and even the Founding Fathers of the American Colonies.

You will be able to access the Video recordings and handouts at your convenience.

...in spite of its storng secular reputation today.

  • Lesson Three:   The Protestant Reformation and its impact on the French Revolution

Who knew the interconnectedness of all these disparate threads from different centuries, yet they are unmistakable when looking at the two centuries together.
